Constructed of multi-faceted intersecting triangle sections bolted together, geodesic domes are both beautiful in their form and complex in their execution. Installations of this style present numerous unique challenges to installers. At Wedge Roofing, our teams are specialized in the techniques required to properly execute and highlight the beauty of a Geodesic dome structure.ย As roofing shingles are manufactured as a square or rectangle, our installers must precisely hand-cut every shingle on site to form the triangular shapes required of the structure. Absolute precision is required to keep the shingle course straight from one faceted section to the next.
ย In addition to multiple faceted sections, Geodesic Domes feature a dramatic change in pitch; from flat at the top, to near vertical at the sides.ย This dramatic two and twelve pitch at the top section requires installers to utilize a waterproofing layer to maintain the continuous line of shingles. As the pitch becomes steeper, the near vertical sides of the dome require scaffolding, additional nailing and hand tabbing of the lower edge of each shingle.
Wedge Roofingโs work on Geodesic Domes has spanned over four decades, from the 1970โs, when Ralph Wedge and his crew installed hand-cut cedar wood shakes to a geodesic dome high above the Renaissance Fair in Blackpoint. To today, where the Wedge Roofing shingle crew received the prestigious Asphalt Manufacturers Silver Excellence Award for their craftsmanship of installing hand-cut GAF shingles to a Geodesic Dome roof in Sonoma, CA.
