Marin County, Sonoma County, San Francisco and Napa
The Marine Mammal Center, established in 1975, is a renowned nonprofit veterinary research hospital and educational center dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing ill and injured marine mammals. Located in the scenic Marin Headlands, just north of San Francisco, the center has treated over 24,000 animals, including seals, sea lions, dolphins, and whales. It also plays a crucial role in advancing marine mammal science, conducting research on marine ecosystem health, and educating the public about marine conservation.
In addition to its critical work with marine life, the center is housed within a historic military installation that is part of the National Park Service. This setting adds to the significance of maintaining the historic integrity of the buildings, which feature iconic red roofs that are characteristic of the area.
Wedge Roofing was honored to contribute to preserving this historic site by undertaking a reroofing project for one of the Marine Mammal Center’s supplemental buildings. Given the need for a complete roof replacement, the project demanded materials replicating the original red-painted wood shingles’ appearance, scale, and texture. To achieve this, Wedge Roofing carefully selected Red Malarkey “The Alaskan” 3-tab asphalt shingles, known for their durability and ability to match the historic aesthetic closely.
The Wedge Team installed the red shingles, preserving the historic nature of the building while meeting modern standards for protection and longevity. This project not only safeguarded the structure but also contributed to the ongoing mission of the Marine Mammal Center, supporting its efforts to rescue marine life and educate the public in a historically rich and environmentally significant location.
Malarkey Alaskan shingles are premium 3-tab asphalt shingles known for their durability and advanced technology. They feature 3M smog-reducing granules, which actively help improve air quality by reducing smog pollutants. Additionally, these shingles incorporate 3M Scotchgardโข algae protection, ensuring a long-lasting, clean appearance by preventing algae growth. The sustainable NEX asphalt technology in these shingles enhances their flexibility and weather resistance, making them an excellent choice for various climates. These innovations make Malarkey Alaskan shingles a sustainable and high-performing roofing option.
